What AI can do with Xero and MYOB right now

JAX, Ask Iris and the ChatGPT and Claude connectors: what each one does, on which plan, and what a person still approves.

As at November 2026, Xero and MYOB both have AI built in, and both connect to ChatGPT and Claude. Xero's JAX answers questions about your figures, helps create invoices and quotes, and on Grow plans and above auto-reconciles bank lines it is highly confident about. MYOB's Ask Iris answers questions on Lite, Pro and AccountRight, while Smart Reconciliation and AI Business Insights are still marked beta. Xero's Claude connector and MYOB's Claude and ChatGPT connector (in beta) are read-only, so they can summarise and draft but cannot change your books.

Treat every output as a suggestion: AI codes, matches and drafts, and a person approves anything that posts to the ledger, gets lodged or gets paid.

Plan inclusions and beta labels change often, so confirm on the vendor's pricing page before you buy.

What AI does Xero have right now?

JAX (Just Ask Xero) is the chat built into Xero. Xero's JAX page says JAX chat is available to all Xero subscribers and users, and that there's "currently no additional charge" for it. The same page says Xero can change JAX's pricing later. JAX only does something when you open it and ask a question, and it only shows information your Xero user permissions allow. It can also help create invoices and quotes. Have a person check each one before it goes out.

Auto-reconcile is the part that works without being asked each time. Xero's bank reconciliation page says it's included on Grow plans and above, and on Ignite it's a paid add-on called AI Automate. JAX only reconciles a bank line on its own when it's "highly confident" of the match. For other lines it suggests a match and leaves the line for you. You can turn the automation on or off for each bank account, and Remove & redo fixes a wrong match.

Xero publishes its own results on its auto bank reconciliation page. It says the feature "auto-reconciles over 60% of the transactions it sees", with "~96% accuracy" on those lines, based on a rolling three-month average from April to July 2026. Xero measures accuracy as the share of auto-reconciled lines that users didn't correct. So a line nobody went back to check counts as correct.

Smart document capture reads receipts, bills and invoices. Xero's smart document capture page says it's on all small business plans, with basic extraction on Grow. You check and approve the details before Xero creates a record.

Xero Ultra, launched in Australia on 7 July 2026 for medium-sized businesses, adds Syft Advanced reporting. Xero's Ultra announcement says that includes "AI-powered insights".

XeroForce is Xero's tool for building AI agents, and it includes a month-end agent. When Xero announced the month-end agent on 19 August 2026, XeroForce was in early access, with general availability "later this year". Xero says the agent gives customers "a complete account of its actions to review and accept". On its Australian XeroForce page, Xero says it is "opening XeroForce to a small group to use on real work". The page has a waitlist and gives no date for a wider release.

What AI does MYOB have right now?

MYOB launched Iris, its AI layer, on 19 October 2026, IT Brief reported. What you get depends on your plan. On AccountRight, MYOB's pricing page puts the AI features on the Plus plan.

Ask Iris is the chat. It's on MYOB Business Lite and Pro and on AccountRight Plus, but not on Solo. MYOB marks it "Available now", with no beta label. Category Suggestions is on all four plans, Solo included.

Three features are still marked beta. Smart Reconciliation and AI Business Insights are on Pro and AccountRight Plus. Smart Invoice Reminders is on Lite, Pro and AccountRight Plus. MYOB's AI accounting page also says Smart Reconciliation is "progressively rolling out to eligible customers", so it may not be in your file yet. The same page says: "However, AI can still get things wrong."

MYOB also sells AI BAS, a paid add-on for Lite and Pro that is still in beta. Have your accountant or registered BAS agent review anything it prepares, and take GST and BAS questions to them. Coverleo doesn't do BAS or tax work.

If you run MYOB Acumatica, release 2026.1.1 renamed its AI features to AI Automation and Anomaly Detection. MYOB's release notes say they "have advanced beyond the experimental phase".

Can ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot connect to your books?

Yes. Some official connections can only read your file. Others can change it, or the vendor hasn't said.

Xero's Claude connector page says: "Claude can't create, edit, approve, reconcile or pay in Xero." It works with a free or paid Claude account and follows your Xero permissions. Xero calls it read-only "at launch", so check that line again before you rely on it. IT Brief reported in June 2026 that the connector worked with one Xero organisation at a time and returned summaries such as cash position and profit and loss, without invoice-level detail. Xero's 16 September 2026 post says Xero will support Claude workflows such as month-end preparation.

MYOB's connector help page says the connection to Claude or ChatGPT is read-only, and that access is being rolled out gradually. MYOB's AI accounting page labels it beta. You need MYOB Business Lite or Pro, or AccountRight, plus your own Claude or ChatGPT subscription. To switch to another business, you disconnect the first one. MYOB advises turning off "Help improve our AI models" in Claude and "Improve the model for everyone" in ChatGPT. It also warns that both may draw on earlier conversations that don't match your live figures.

The other connections need more care:

  • Xero's ChatGPT app is "now live", the same 16 September 2026 Xero post says. You can ask about profit and loss, the balance sheet, invoices and bills. The post doesn't say whether the app can change records. Until Xero confirms it, check anything the app offers to do before you accept.
  • Xero announced a Microsoft 365 Copilot integration on 2 July 2026. Xero says it will answer financial questions in Copilot Chat, bring live Xero data into Excel and link back to Xero for tasks such as sending payment reminders. Xero's Australian page for the Copilot connector says Xero subscribers can use it with a paid Microsoft 365 Business or Enterprise account. The same page says "Copilot is read-only at launch", so any change is made in Xero itself. As with Claude, check that line again before you rely on it.
  • Xero's app in Google Gemini can make changes once you confirm them. Xero's 14 October 2026 release says any operation that modifies financial data, "such as issuing an invoice", needs "explicit user confirmation" before it runs. That confirmation is your approval step, so read it each time.

If your plan has no connector, or your MYOB file isn't in the rollout yet, you can export a report and upload it to an AI assistant. Use a business account with training switched off, and leave personal information out. The OAIC recommends, as a matter of best practice, that organisations do not enter personal information, "and particularly sensitive information, into publicly available generative AI tools". Is it safe to put business data into ChatGPT? covers which plans train on your chats. Copilot, ChatGPT or Claude compares the three assistants.

Can you build your own connection?

You can on Xero. Xero publishes an open-source MCP server on GitHub. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way to let an AI assistant use another program's tools. Xero's server has read tools and write tools. The write tools include create-invoice, create-bank-transaction, create-manual-journal and create-payment, plus payroll tools such as approve-payroll-timesheet. Whoever connects it to an assistant hands that assistant those tools. Before anyone does, read the tool list and agree which actions a person must approve.

Xero's tiered developer fees are billed to app makers through its developer portal, separately from your Xero subscription, according to Xero's developer pricing page. The MCP server's instructions suggest a Custom Connection, which Xero says stays on its existing commercial terms, so ask Xero what that costs before you start.

To build on MYOB's API, developers join MYOB's paid developer program. Its page doesn't mention an MCP server.

Which add-on apps work alongside Xero and MYOB?

For bills and receipts, Dext publishes to Xero and to MYOB AccountRight. Dext's auto-publish setting sends eligible items to your accounting software automatically, based on rules you set, without a person opening each one. Leave it off if someone should check every bill. Hubdoc also reads bills and receipts, and works with Xero and QuickBooks Online, not MYOB.

For payables, Lightyear says it uses AI to pull line items from supplier bills. It also routes approvals by bill value or supplier, and works with Xero and MYOB. ApprovalMax, an approvals app, works with Xero, QuickBooks Online and NetSuite, not MYOB.

For reporting, Fathom works with Xero, QuickBooks and MYOB AccountRight, and its Pro plan includes AI report commentary. Calxa connects to Xero, QuickBooks Online and MYOB, but its pricing page shows no AI features. Syft supports MYOB Business but not AccountRight, according to Syft's help centre.

Where must a person approve?

In Xero and MYOB alike, a finance team has four places to keep a person's approval:

  • For supplier bills, AI can read the document and draft the entry, and a person approves it before it posts. If a bill shows new bank details, leave the supplier record alone until someone has called the supplier on a number you already had.
  • For bank lines, sample the auto-reconciled lines each week, including ones nobody flagged. Xero's accuracy figure only counts the errors users caught.
  • For payment reminders and month-end commentary, AI drafts and a person checks the figures and the tone before anything is sent.
  • For payments, payroll and BAS, a person approves each one. No connector or add-on should be set up to pay, run payroll or lodge without that step.

Coverleo's AI Business Specialist + service is set up the same way: someone in your team approves each item before anything is sent, posted or paid.

If AI output feeds decisions about customers or staff, read the Privacy Act's new rule on automated decisions, which starts on 10 December 2026.

Where should you start?

Check your plan first. On Xero, auto-reconcile needs Grow or above, or the AI Automate add-on on Ignite. On MYOB, Smart Reconciliation needs Pro or AccountRight Plus.

Then pick one job and one feature. Turn on auto-reconcile for a single bank account, say, and check a sample of its lines every week. Widen it to the next account once the samples come back clean.

If you're weighing who should set this up, AI consultant, in-house hire or ongoing support compares the options. Why most Australian businesses aren't getting value from AI yet looks at where projects stall.

Frequently asked questions

Does Xero have AI?

Yes. As at November 2026, JAX chat is on every Xero plan at no extra charge. Auto-reconcile is included on Grow and above, and on Ignite it's a paid add-on called AI Automate.

Is MYOB's AI on every plan?

No. Ask Iris is on MYOB Business Lite and Pro and on AccountRight Plus, but not Solo. Smart Reconciliation and AI Business Insights are on Pro and AccountRight Plus, and MYOB still marks both beta. Category Suggestions is on all four plans.

Can ChatGPT or Claude change my records?

Not through the read-only connectors. Xero says its Claude connector can't create, edit, approve, reconcile or pay, and MYOB says its connector for Claude and ChatGPT is read-only. Xero's launch post for its ChatGPT app doesn't say whether it can change records. Xero's MCP server can create invoices and payments, and its Gemini app can issue an invoice once you confirm, so check each tool before you connect it.

Can AI do my BAS?

Not on its own. MYOB's AI BAS, a beta paid add-on for Lite and Pro, flags missing receipts and unusual GST for you to decide on. Take GST and BAS questions to your accountant or registered BAS agent, and have a person check the BAS before it's lodged. Coverleo is not a registered tax or BAS agent.

Is it safe to put Xero data into ChatGPT?

It depends on your ChatGPT plan, its training setting and what's in the data. The OAIC recommends that organisations do not enter personal information into publicly available generative AI tools. Is it safe to put business data into ChatGPT? covers which plans train on your chats.

Do I need a paid app?

Often not at first. JAX chat and Xero's smart document capture come with every Xero small business plan, and Category Suggestions comes with every MYOB plan. Check what your plan includes before you pay for an add-on.
